Punjab has taken a big step toward green mobility with the announcement of a new Electric Taxi Scheme. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Yasin revealed that the program will be launched within the next 15 days, creating both job opportunities and cleaner transport options.
The minister shared the plan during Pakistan’s first-ever Transport Expo. He explained that the Electric Taxi Scheme is a key part of Punjab’s Transport 2030 Vision. The initiative focuses on modernizing public transport and cutting harmful emissions. Unemployed citizens will be able to get electric taxis and bikes on interest-free instalments, making the project affordable for low-income families.
Bilal Yasin also confirmed that Lahore will see its first tram service by February 2026. In the first phase, the tram will run on Jail Road and Main Boulevard. Later, the service will be expanded to Canal Road.
At the Expo, officials showcased Punjab’s wider transport roadmap. This includes the construction of 41 modern depots across the province and the introduction of electric buses from December 2025. The long-term plan targets the rollout of 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030.
To support the Electric Taxi Scheme and other clean mobility projects, Punjab will set up 1,000 EV charging stations. The government also plans to test autonomous driverless vehicles. By 2030, the province aims to convert 80% of its transport network to electric.
Sindh has also joined the race for sustainable transport. The Sindh Workers Welfare Board has announced the distribution of 10,000 free electric motorcycles to female industrial workers. Sindh Labour Minister Shahid Thaheem said the initiative will give women better access to mobility while promoting eco-friendly travel.
The Electric Taxi Scheme marks a major shift in Pakistan’s urban transport policy. Together with trams, buses, and charging stations, it promises to reshape mobility and employment in the years ahead.
