Iran has agreed to permit the 17 Indian crew members aboard a cargo ship linked to Israel, which Iran has detained, to meet with Indian government officials, as announced by the Iranian foreign ministry on Monday.
This assurance follows a phone conversation between India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Amir Abdollahian, during which Jaishankar raised concerns about the crew’s situation.
According to a statement from the Iranian foreign minister, Jaishankar requested assistance in resolving the matter. “Dr. Amir Abdollahian assured that Iran is actively pursuing the details of the detained ship and soon Indian government representatives will be able to meet with the crew,” the statement read.
Since the ship’s detention on Saturday, India has been engaging with Iran to secure the prompt release of the crew members.
Against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of restraint and de-escalation.
In a social media post on X, he wrote, “Had a productive discussion with Iranian FM @Amirabdolahian. Raised the issue of releasing 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries and discussed the regional situation. Emphasized the need to avoid further escalation, exercise restraint, and prioritize diplomacy. Agreed to stay in touch.”
Following Israeli strikes on its consulate in Syria, resulting in the deaths of seven Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards a few weeks ago, Iran launched its first direct attack on Israel, deploying numerous drones and missiles.
India has called for immediate de-escalation and instructed its embassies in the region to maintain continuous contact with Indian residents.
Expressing serious concern over the mounting hostilities between Israel and Iran, which pose a threat to regional peace and security, the Ministry of External Affairs urged for an immediate return to diplomacy, urging all parties to step back from violence.
