ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission has given its nod to appoint Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The decision came during a meeting of the Judicial Commission convened to discuss appointments to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, the meeting approved Justice Afghan’s appointment, extending his tenure in the Supreme Court until June 2028.
Justice Afghan, who assumed office as a judge of the Balochistan High Court in May 2011, later served as its Chief Justice from August 2021.
In addition, the Judicial Commission unanimously approved the appointment of Justice Shahzad Ahmed Malik as the next Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC). The incumbent Chief Justice of LHC, Ameer Bhatti, is set to retire on March 7 next month.
Both appointments have been referred to the Parliamentary Committee for further consideration.
It’s worth noting that the decision to elevate Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan to the Supreme Court was taken a day prior to this announcement.
