Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has called a provincial apex committee meeting on Monday to review the security situation across the province. The KP apex committee meeting comes a day after the federal government imposed an emergency and governor’s rule in the province.
Governor Kundi will chair the session. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is also expected to attend, along with senior military officials.
Sources said key decisions are likely on 12 sensitive districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The committee is expected to discuss deploying the army in these districts, along with other related security measures. No official details of the agenda have been released so far.
On Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in the province under Articles 232(1) and 234(1) of the Constitution. The President’s House announced the decision, and the proclamation said the emergency took effect immediately.
The proclamation pointed to the growing intensity of terrorist incidents, which it said had put the lives and property of citizens at serious risk. It also noted a rise in attacks on government installations, infrastructure and law enforcement agencies.
According to the document, the provincial government had failed to show the required commitment or take effective steps against terrorism and lawlessness.
The proclamation also cited a report by the KP governor. That report, it said, highlighted a breakdown of the constitutional system in the province and concluded that the provincial government was unable to function in line with the Constitution.
