Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup have become increasingly slim. However, there is still one possible path that could keep their hopes alive.
Sri Lanka crashed out of the semi-final race after losing to New Zealand national cricket team. With two defeats, Sri Lanka are now officially out of contention.
Current points table scenario
New Zealand sit second on the table with three points. Pakistan are third with one point and still have one match remaining against Sri Lanka national cricket team.
For Pakistan, a simple win will not be enough. They must defeat Sri Lanka by a significant margin to improve their net run rate (NRR), which currently lags behind New Zealand’s.
England-New Zealand clash key to Pakistan’s hopes
The decisive fixture is between England cricket team and New Zealand, scheduled for Friday.
If New Zealand beat England, Pakistan will be eliminated from the semi-final race regardless of their result against Sri Lanka.
However, if England defeat New Zealand, the group standings will tighten. In that case, Pakistan will need a commanding victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday, February 28, while also ensuring their net run rate surpasses New Zealand’s.
Net run rate could decide fate
At present, New Zealand hold a clear advantage in net run rate. But if they lose heavily to England, the gap could narrow. That scenario would open a small window for Pakistan.
In simple terms, Pakistan’s only route to the semi-finals is this:
- England must beat New Zealand by a big margin.
- Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka convincingly and improve their net run rate sufficiently.
Anything less will end Pakistan’s campaign.
