The United States has approved visas allowing Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to travel to New York for next week’s UN General Assembly, the BBC reported, even as relations between Washington and Tehran remain strained.
According to the BBC, Pezeshkian and Araghchi are part of the core group within Iran’s delegation cleared to attend the General Assembly’s high-level week. A US State Department spokesman confirmed the decision Thursday, noting that the move aligns with America’s responsibilities as the country hosting the UN.
The spokesman explained that allowing the Iranian delegation to attend was consistent with the host country’s obligations during UN General Assembly High Level Week.
Restrictions Remain in Place for Iranian Officials
Despite receiving clearance to travel, Iran’s representatives won’t have unrestricted access while on US soil. The delegation will face limits on where they can travel and will be barred from purchasing certain luxury items and other restricted goods. Additionally, the State Department indicated that this year’s Iranian delegation would be smaller in size compared to the group that attended last year.
Pezeshkian and Araghchi’s trip comes as the Iran delegation UN General Assembly appearance unfolds against the backdrop of continuing hostilities between Washington and Tehran. That conflict erupted on February 28 following combined military strikes by the US and Israel against Iranian targets, a development that has heightened instability across the region and disrupted global energy trade.
Since fighting broke out, Iran has carried out repeated strikes targeting Israel, American military installations, and allied nations in the Gulf. Meanwhile, attempts at diplomatic resolution have struggled to gain traction.
General Assembly Session Already Underway
The UN’s 81st General Assembly session has already begun, with the General Debate portion set to open on Tuesday. The event draws heads of state and senior officials from around the globe for a packed schedule of speeches and behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Per the schedule referenced in BBC’s reporting, President Pezeshkian is slated to speak before the General Assembly on Wednesday. That speech would hand Tehran a significant international stage to lay out its stance on the ongoing conflict and its dealings with both the US and Israel.
Foreign Minister Araghchi is also anticipated to take an active diplomatic role during the New York gathering, where high-ranking officials typically hold side meetings away from the main assembly floor.
Visa Decision Arrives Amid Mounting Pressure
Granting entry to the Iranian delegation comes as the current US administration faces growing political pressure to help bring the conflict to a close. What began as a confrontation between Iran and Israel has since spread, drawing in neighboring countries and threatening critical shipping routes.
This isn’t the first time Washington has placed restrictions on visiting Iranian officials. Last year’s delegation was barred from shopping at wholesale chains like Costco and needed prior approval to purchase select luxury items, including jewelry, alcohol, and vehicles.
Separately, the BBC noted that the US recently rejected visa applications for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation ahead of this year’s General Assembly. The White House has continued to withhold recognition of the Palestinian delegation’s legitimacy, marking the second straight year its members have been denied entry.
Pezeshkian’s anticipated arrival in New York lands at a delicate juncture in US-Iran relations, with both the Iranian president and his foreign minister poised to leverage the UN gathering for high-stakes diplomacy while the broader conflict between the two nations shows no signs of resolution.
