PTI Senator Azam Swati Acquitted in Controversial Tweets Cases as a district and sessions court in Islamabad cleared him of two charges linked to his social media posts on Wednesday. The verdict marks the end of a prolonged legal battle that began in November 2022 when the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing arrested him over tweets deemed offensive toward Pakistan’s military leadership.
The cases were later transferred to the newly established National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in April 2025 for further proceedings. According to FIA officials, Swati’s posts were part of what they called a “malicious campaign” intended to spread unrest and discredit state institutions for “ulterior motives.”
Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, while announcing the judgment, dismissed the cases registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), thereby acquitting the PTI leader.
Swati had been facing multiple cases across various provinces over his controversial remarks on social media targeting senior military officials. His first arrest came on October 13, 2022, after he posted a message considered hateful and threatening toward the then-army chief, judiciary, and other state institutions. Although he was granted bail, the FIA rearrested him on November 27, 2022, for again using abusive language against the military leadership.
The legal saga continued as Balochistan police detained him on December 2, 2022, in a similar case registered in Quetta, even while he was on judicial remand in Adiala Jail. He was transferred to Balochistan under a transit remand before the Balochistan High Court (BHC) intervened, ordering the quashing of all related cases in the province. Shortly after, Sindh Police also took him into custody, but the Sindh High Court followed suit by dismissing the charges and granting him bail.
After months of legal proceedings across multiple jurisdictions, Senator Azam Swati was finally released from jail on January 3, 2023. His recent acquittal by the Islamabad court concludes one of the most widely discussed political and cybercrime cases involving a PTI leader.
